Youth Mental Health Aware
Build a clearer understanding of young people’s mental health with practical, compassionate training that helps learners recognise common issues, respond with empathy and signpost towards appropriate support.

Youth Mental Health Aware
The Youth Mental Health Aware course is a three-hour introductory session designed to raise awareness of young people’s mental health. It explores common mental health issues affecting young people, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and psychosis, while helping learners build the confidence to support young people with care and understanding.
This youth mental health awareness training is ideal for anyone who works with, supports or cares for young people and wants a foundational understanding of mental health. Delivered by Changing Minds Training, the course is practical, accessible and handled with warmth, sensitivity and respect.
What is Youth Mental Health First Aid Training?
Youth Mental Health Aware training is an introductory course that helps learners better understand young people’s mental health and how mental health issues may affect thoughts, feelings, behaviour and everyday life.
The course is designed for people who may not need the full Youth Mental Health First Aid course, but who still want to feel more informed and confident when supporting young people. It raises awareness of common mental health issues, explores risk and protective factors, and helps learners consider how to relate to young people’s experiences with empathy.
This course does not make learners therapists, counsellors or clinicians. Instead, it provides a supportive foundation in youth mental health awareness, helping learners recognise when a young person may need support, respond with compassion and understand the importance of safeguarding and signposting.
For schools, youth services, children’s social care teams and health settings, Youth Mental Health Aware training can be a helpful first step in building shared understanding and confidence around young people’s wellbeing.

Who Is This Course For?
This course is suitable for anyone wanting to work more effectively with young people living with mental health issues and support them with empathy. It is ideal for education staff, youth workers, and children’s social care and health teams who want a foundational understanding of young people’s mental health.
It may be especially useful for:
The course is a helpful option for teams who want to improve awareness across a wider group of people, without requiring everyone to complete a longer Youth Mental Health First Aid course.
It can also support organisations that want to create a more compassionate, informed and confident approach to supporting young people.

What will learners gain from the course?
By the end of the Youth Mental Health Aware course, learners will have developed a stronger understanding of common mental health issues affecting young people and how to offer support with empathy.
Learners will explore how to:
- Understand common mental health issues affecting young people
- Build skills to work more effectively with young people facing mental health issues
- Support young people and relate to their experiences
- Recognise some of the signs and symptoms of mental ill health in young people
- Understand the importance of signposting and safeguarding
- Reflect on self-awareness and self-care when supporting others
The course is designed to be practical and reassuring. It helps learners understand that supporting a young person does not mean having all the answers. Often, the most helpful starting point is being able to listen, respond with care and know when further support may be needed.
The Youth Mental Health Aware course is delivered over three hours.
It can be delivered face-to-face or online. The course includes presentations, group discussion and workshop activities.
This format gives learners a balanced introduction to young people’s mental health, with time to reflect, ask questions and explore practical ways to support young people in real settings.
Our goal is to create a warm and respectful learning environment where sensitive subjects can be approached carefully. Learners are supported to build confidence at a manageable pace, with a clear focus on awareness, empathy, safeguarding and appropriate support.
