Become a MHFA Champion

Course Overview

By training as an MHFA Champion, you’ll learn to identify, understand and support someone who may be experiencing poor mental health.

You’ll gain an understanding of different mental health conditions, along with the knowledge, skills and confidence to approach and have a conversation about mental health and know where to signpost others to further support.

What is MHFA Champion training?

The Framework

MHFA Champion training helps learners develop the knowledge and confidence to act as Mental Health Champions within their workplace, service or community setting.

A Mental Health Champion is someone who can advocate for mental health awareness, recognise signs that someone may be struggling and support positive wellbeing in themselves and others.

This course is about giving you a practical introduction to mental health first aid, common mental health issues and the MHFA action plan, helping them respond with care and confidence.

For organisations, Mental Health Champions can play an important role in helping mental health become part of everyday workplace conversations. They can support awareness, encourage early conversations and help signpost people towards appropriate support.

Who Is This Course For?

Audiences

This course is suitable for anyone who wants to become an MHFA Champion.

It is particularly popular with organisations that want to build a network of workplace Mental Health Champions across their teams. This may include:

HR and L&D teams
Wellbeing champions
Line managers and team leaders
Employees across the general workforce
Charities
Community groups
Care homes
Voluntary sector health providers

The course is a helpful option for workplaces that want more people to feel confident talking about mental health, recognising signs of mental ill health and supporting positive wellbeing.

It may also suit organisations that are not ready to train full Mental Health First Aiders, but still want to build meaningful awareness and confidence across their teams.

What Will Learners Gain From The Course?

By the end of the MHFA Champion course, learners will have developed a clearer understanding of mental health and a stronger sense of confidence in supporting positive wellbeing.

Learners will explore how to:

  • Understand common mental health issues
  • Advocate for mental health awareness with confidence
  • Spot the signs of mental ill health
  • Support positive wellbeing in themselves and others

The course is designed to be practical and confidence-building. Learners are encouraged to reflect on how mental health affects people at work, how stress can show up and how early support can make conversations feel less difficult.

They will also explore the MHFA action plan, known as ALGEE, giving them a simple framework to support helpful and appropriate conversations.

The MHFA Champion Course is delivered over one day.

Format & Delivery

It can be delivered face-to-face or online. The course includes presentations, group discussion and workshop activities. This gives learners the opportunity to build understanding, reflect on real-world examples and practise applying their learning in a supportive environment.

We create a warm and respectful learning space where people can ask questions, explore sensitive topics carefully and build confidence at a pace that feels manageable.

What Does The Course Cover?

The MHFA Champion course is delivered across two sessions.
